pi v1.0.0 goes fullscreen-first with a leaner codemode, and four patches follow within four days
pi v1.0.0 was published on October 1, 2026 — the project’s 1.0 milestone. The TUI now runs fullscreen by default; tuiMode: "regular" (or --tui-mode regular) keeps the terminal’s normal scrollback for anyone who wants the old behavior.
Codemode gets leaner in both directions: about 40 percent fewer prompt tokens — with the default tools and codemode active, a GPT-5.6 request shrinks from about 5,300 to 3,300 tokens — and errors that tell the model how to recover, from close-match suggestions for misspelled tool names to argument-shape rejections on models.classify() and the new models.generateImages(). That image API is the other headline: scripts generate images with the session’s credentials, image() attaches the results, and usage counts toward the session cost like models.classify().
Login flows widen: /login offers Radius at the top level and sets up its MCP server in one step, Anthropic gains a copy-code method for headless setups where the browser runs on another machine, and MCP OAuth hardens with oauth.authServerMetadataUrl, RFC 9207 iss checks, credentials stored per server, and step-up sign-in that keeps granted scopes. quietStartup: "header" keeps the version and key hints while hiding the rest.
The fix list is long; two stand out. A long assistant message now keeps about a fifth of the heap it kept before, and deferred MCP tools that tool_search had loaded are no longer dropped on resume or /reload.
Then the patch series: v1.0.1 (October 3) adds a Nix flake, project overrides for MCP servers through .pi/mcp.json, MCP Client ID Metadata Documents, tool renderers for unregistered tools, and Cloudflare Clef classifiers. v1.0.2 (October 4) adds samplingParamsByThinkingLevel for OpenAI-compatible APIs. v1.0.3 (October 5) renames the Azure provider from azure-openai-responses to azure — a breaking change — while adding Foundry Chat Completions deployments starting with azure/deepseek-v4-pro, and saves codemode images to temp files. v1.0.4 (October 5) accepts * patterns in --tools and --exclude-tools, and adds --no-mcp.
Every release page in the series has the full list, fixes included.
