Nine pull requests merge into pi ahead of the next release

Nine pull requests merged into the pi coding agent on September 1, 2026, all landing on main after the v0.84.4 release from August 28. The batch — one feature, seven bug fixes, and one behavior change from seven contributors — spans the TUI, provider compatibility, the extension SDK, and agent lifecycle.

The feature is pull request #8900 from rwachtler, from a suggestion by dgtlntv: the /thinking, /models, /scoped-models, and /trust pickers now use a two-column selection layout where → ✓ xhigh marks the active option. In /scoped-models, Ctrl+A checks every entry and Ctrl+X clears them; unavailable models render struck through beside the dimmed [unavailable] label. Companion pull request #8950 keeps theme markers visible.

Two compatibility fixes target provider and network edges. Pull request #8941 from scturtle adds a supportsMaxOutputTokens flag (default true) to OpenAIResponsesCompat, registered in the model-config schema for custom providers — some OpenAI Responses-compatible gateways, Codex-protocol proxies among them, reject max_output_tokens with a 400 BadRequest, and setting the flag to false omits the parameter from requests. Pull request #8737 from MeiSiristhebest reworks NO_PROXY parsing so *.example.com, .example.com, and bare domains match subdomains and root domains consistently, and IPv6 entries — bracketed [::1]:8080 or bare ::1 — are no longer misread as host-port pairs.

The behavior change is pull request #8627 from vmizg: the cwd-sensitive tools — read, write, edit, grep, find, ls, bash, and the powershell tool sharing its shell implementation — now resolve paths against ctx.cwd from the extension context, falling back to the tool-creation cwd. Two fixes tighten agent lifecycle. Pull request #8936 from acmerfight stops prepared parallel tool calls from starting after a later preflight abort, finishing them as Operation aborted without calling tool.execute() or afterToolCall. Pull request #8937, also from acmerfight, moves teardownCurrent() ahead of an in-memory fork so a late toolResult cannot land in the replacement session.

The remaining two are TUI environment fixes. Pull request #8828 from Perlence adds capability detection for Zed’s integrated terminal, which has shipped an Alacritty core since v1.17.2 — hyperlinks and true color, no images. Pull request #8898 from bartlomiejkida wraps the SIGWINCH self-signal so environments whose seccomp policies reject kill(2) with EACCES, some Kubernetes profiles among them, no longer crash pi at startup. None of the nine is in a published release yet; users on v0.84.4 get all of it with the next version bump.
